Right from ancient time, agriculture is backbone of Indian economy .But after LPG changes are seen in developing countries like India. Agriculture has following role to play –

  • Role in national income: - After independence its role in Indian economy was 56%. Because of growing industrialization now its share has been reduced to 14%. In developed nations like U.K., U.S.A. its share is just 2%. Thus, its reducing share indicates the (+) ve dynamism of Indian economy.
  • Role in employment generation: - After independence it contributed 70% in employment generation but at present its providing employment to 50% of population. In Developed countries like U.K., U.S.A., it provides employment to 2% people. In Japan it provides employment to 5% population while in Bangladesh; its share is as high as 60%.In short, it shows the strength of developing economy of India.
  • Role in consumption of common man: - The average consumption pattern of an Indian is linked with the trio of Roti, Kapda & makan. First two are provided by agriculture. An average Indian is vegetarian hence his hunger & nutritional requirement are provided by Agriculture.According to estimate, the agriculture fulfills up to 98% requirements of an averageIndian.
  • Role in exports:-  The Indian agro-products & their processed form are always in demand in foreign countries.  The Indian agro & related products contributes 10%  in exports. This export gives the useful foreign exchange to Indian economy.
  • Role in economic stability - Even now, the pulse of Indian economy is decided by agriculture. The low production in agriculture gives rise to rising prices of agriculture commodities &iflationary trends. It leads to total chaos.
  • To provide raw material to other industries – Agriculture provides raw material to agro-based industries, food processing industries e.g. Sugar-cane to sugar cane industries, cotton to textile industries, oil-seeds to oil industries, Tomato to tomato catch-up industries, apple to Jam industries. In short it has a special role to play in industries.
