XXII CWG 2022, BIRMINGHAM
What it is? : A member-based organization of members of Commonwealth of Nations that receives no funding from the government and exists to administer, control and coordinate the participation of sports events and the athletes with the motto “Sports for All”.
History: Also called Friendly Games, in 1881, a new idea of having multiple games at one sports event was introduced by Astley Cooper. CWG are quadrennial which means held in four years. This game was known as British Empire Games from 1930 to 1950. In 2002, Commonwealth Games was the first fully inclusive International multi-sports event as it was the first of its kind to allow Athletes with a disability to be included as full members. The 1st CWG 1930 held in Hamilton, Canada.
CWG 2022 : Itcomprises 72 nations and territories, most of which were formerly under the British Empire, representing 2.5 billion people of the world.
India in CWG 2022 : Ranked at 4th place, in terms of medals, India bagged a total of 61 medals, comprising of 22 Gold, 16 Silver, and 23 Bronze. This was India’s 4th best performance at the CWG with respect to winning gold medal. Following are the imp. Facts:
- Tennis star Sharath Kamal turned out to be the most successful Indian athlete, with 4 medals comprising of 3 Gold.
- Wrestlers added most to India’s medal tally. All the 12 Wrestlers have won medals.
- Weightlifters bagged a total of 10 medals, including 3 Gold medals.
- In Table Tennis, India secured 7 medals, including 4 Gold.
- Women’s four team created history in Lawn Bowls by securing India’s first gold medal in lawn bowls.
- shooting and archery was absent from Indian side.
Women in CWG 2022 : Indian women's team scripted history by winning the country’s first-ever Gold Medal in “Women’s Four Lawn Bowls” Sport.
What is Lawn Bowls sport? : A mix of “Ten-pin Bowling” and the winter sport of “Curling”. Team has to get the ‘Bowl’ (the Ball) closest to a target, which is known as the ‘Jack’.Bowls are mostly spherical ball-like objects, typically made of wood, rubber or plastic resin, having flattened sides.
Best Performer: Australia topping the medal table with 178 medals including 67 gold, 57 silver and 54 bronze medals. Australia's medal total was closely followed by England on 176 and Canada on 92. Since the first Commonwealth Games held in Canada in 1930, Australia has accrued a record 1,001 gold medals.
