Agriculture is regarded as the backbone of the state's economy. According to an economic survey conducted by the Government of MP,… 's contribution to G.D.P. is now 20%.

74.00% of the population of the state depends upon agriculture, directly or indirectly. As per art-48 of the directive principle, there is an emphasis on the promotion of agriculture and animal husbandry.

The state is regarded as a backward State (HDI-0.375 IN 2011,……IN 2017 MP-0.594,…India-0.64)in the field of agriculture.

The following are the …..reasons for the backwardness of M.P.:-

1) The old-age traditional techniques of agriculture.

2) Lack of modern means of irrigation.

3) The nature of the topography of the state is not congenial for agriculture because of slopes, ups & downs.

4) Lack of penetration of government schemes related to agriculture to the medium & small farmers.

5) Lack of fertile soil in the state e.g. except Chambal & Malwa area

6) Lack of means of transportation.

7) The size of the land holding is small. The maximum land holdings are less than 5 hectares so it is difficult to afford modern means & appliances for agriculture.

Land Use In M.P.

It means how much land is used for agriculture. In M.P. …….per capita sown area is  0.34 hectare, in M.P. the ……total cropped area under all crops are 118 lack hectares out of which the ……food grains covers 62% area, ……… non-food gains cover 38% area.

In M.P. the ……average size of land holding is decreasing, it is …..now 2.2 hectares per capita.

The following are factors that decide …land use-

1) Physical character :-  Plane land-…..       more land use

Unequal land-…….. less land use

Sloped land-………minimum land use

Moderate slope- ……through contour agriculture

Depression -  ………good land use for rice.

2) Nature of Soil:-  Sandy soil-…..less land use

Red-yellow soil - …….average land use

Black & alluvial -…….maximum land use

3) Rainfall:- good rain is …congenial for land use in the western area of M.P. where rainfall is 75 C.M. & there is the absence of means of irrigation that why land use is less whereas, in the eastern area, rainfall 125cm land use is max.

4) Agro-techniques:- development technique -maximum land use e.g. even in less rainfall areas if there is suitable irrigation tech like sprinkler & drip irrigation.

5) Hybrid seeds-

6) Fertilizes –

Areas where …land use is more than 50% are-

Chambal Valley:-irrigation soil, Plateau of Malwa:-rainfall soil,

Plateau of Rewa-Panna

Areas where land use is less than ?rd-

1) plateau of Baghelkhand  2) Ranges of Satpura-maikal   3) Chhatarpur & Tikamgarh
